2009 - The year that was ! We started the New Year with some wonderful initiatives and projects : The " For the love of Dance " - Let's Dance Project launched on the 31st January with auditions to find the lucky few who would be selected to attend a three day workshop hosted by MIDM at Maru-a Pula School. 17 Lucky hopefuls were selected to attend, after 3 gruelling elimination rounds of choreographed sessions in traditional , hip hop and jive sessions. On the 5th Febraury , Andrew Kola was selected as the Winner. Well done to Andrew and all the participants of this workshop. Andrew left for 2 months on the 13th February for South Africa. We will keep you updated on his progress.

Wissam Boustany visited Gaborone from the 12th -13th February 2009 Wissam Boustany travelled with the pianist Jeanette Micklem : and conducted a flute/piano recital in Gaborone . There was one day of intense masterclass/workshops for local musicians alongside the pianist Jeanette Micklem and Two concerts involving some local music students. Biographies
Wissam Boustany has toured South and North America, Europe and the Middle/Far East and Africa- where he continues to present many concerts, master-classes and workshops Born in Lebanon, Wissam began his musical studies in Beirut with his stepfather. He moved to Britain in 1977 where he studied at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. In 1982 he won the Silver Medal at the Madeira international Flute Competition and the woodwind prize in the Royal Overseas League Competition, as well as the silver medal in the Shell/LSO Competition and the 2nd prize in the woodwind section BBC Young Musician of the Year. In 1997 he was awarded a knighthood in Lebanon in recognition of his music and humanitarian work. He founded Towards Humanity, a multi-decade international initiative working with musicians and charities helping communities suffering from the tragedies of war - a project which was inaugurated at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in February 1995 and in 1998 he was presented with the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum, Switzerland.
Wissam's experiences of the war in Lebanon greatly influenced his outlook on both Life and Music and he continues to use his music as a powerful healing force to open the doors of inspiration between people and nations, and help us reflect on our common humanity. He currently teaches at Trinity College of Music in Greenwich, London.
Jeanette Micklem was educated in Zimbabwe and obtained an Honours degree in History with the London University and later, studied at the Royal College of Music. Jeanette returned to Zimbabwe and made her name as a performer, an accompanist and teacher. She has performed throughout the South African region as well as Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and Britain, partnering many international artistes including Tasmin Little, Ivry Gitlis, Wissam Boustany, Susan Milan and Emma Johnson. She has also appeared at the Grahamstown Music Festival with the SABC Symphony Orchestra, and the Pietermaritzburg Orchestra and is a regular soloist with Musica Viva in New York. Recently Jeanette performed with the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa and will be in America for an extensive tour in April this year. She is a member of the Board of the Zimbabwe College of Music where she also chairs the Academic Committee. The programme included :

Each nationality represented themselves at the event by showcasing their country through an exhibit that included: Their Flag, brochures, pictures, projects and initiatives they were working on. Clothing – fashion, costumes, national dress Food and Beverage – Samples and recipes Music – Utilizing local talent / Dance – again using local talent to demonstrate. Any and all unique and special features from your country e.g. learn our language workshops or fun games. We are launched an event that aims to "celebrate our cultural differences". The search was on to find the TOP 10 per age category for Gaborone. The competition was immense , and the judges descision tough.... Spring Break is No Time to Relax - Jazz Students Tour in Africa
Forty-nine Milton Academy jazz students and parents will journey to South Africa and Botswana over the March break for the jazz program’s seventh overseas musical tour. Following a quick visit to the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, students kick off the tour at the Maru-a-Pula School in Gaborone, Botswana. Other stops on the trip include Port Elizabeth for a shared concert with Pearson High School; Plettenberg Bay for a hike on Robberg Peninisula; and Cape Town for a performance at Westerford High School, a tour of Robben Island, and two performances at the Green Dolphin Restaurant and Jazz Club. On Human Rights Day (March 21), the Amy Biehl Foundation will stage a jazz festival in a Cape Town township featuring the Milton students. This is a singular honor for Milton and the fourth such event welcoming Milton. Students will also fly to Johannesburg for four days of concerts with Cornwall College, the University of South African and the Music Academy of Gauteng. After a visit to Soweto, the Hector Pieterson and Apartheid Museums, students will return home. **********************************************
