Maitisong

Some truly diverse and incredible events showcased at Maitisong during the month of AUGUST 2009 !

The Drakensberg Boys choir performed on the

1st August at MAITISONG . The afternoon concert was P60 per person - 14h00 till 15h00
at Maitisong.

Over 500 school children from various schools were hosted at NO charge at this mini performance by the BOYS.

The Evening Performance at P120-00 per person  ( inclusive of a warm mug of fresh soup and freshly baked bread) started 19h30 at Maitisong . What a truly lovely evening !

In addition, Maitisong and Choppies in association with Northside Primary School hosted a CHORAL WORKSHOP which was conducted by the Johann Van Der Sandt and the Drakensberg Boys Choir.  This included 3 One hour sessions from 9am to 12pm ( inclusive of a tea break) at Northside Primary School There was no Charge. This was of particular benefit to teachers, choir members and boys interested in joining a choir and enjoy music.  This choir has achieved international acclaim and has a reputation for maintaining an exceptional musical standard.  The Drakensberg Boys Choir is well known and cherished for its unique style of diversity and has been touring extensively across the globe since 1971. With its unique African repertoire containing various traditional works such as ‘Shosholoza’ and ‘Night sounds’ its Classical, Rock, Pop Jazz, and Folk tips,  the choir is bound to set the stage ablaze.

The choir, which is a representative of multi-faceted cultures that make up South Africa has created a new trend in the international choral scene that transcends the conventional. The choir which is always made up of boys between nine and fifteen years of age has already received a special award at Disney’s Magic Kingdom in recognition of the pleasure they brought to the American audiences, and at the request of the Vatican sang at papal audience in the presence of 25 000 people. The choir has achieved international acclaim and a reputation for maintaining an exceptional musical standard. Many first time concert goers expect to hear only classical and formal choral music but the choir treats and delights audiences with a refreshing programme of Jazz, popular, religious, classical and folk music from Bach and Beethoven to Mercury and African.

BIG LOU AND DAVE performing with

ALPORT MHLANGA the driving force behind the Maru-a-Pula Marimbas - Pictured above.

Big Lou, the accordion princess, fell passionately in love with the accordion 25 years ago.  The love affair has never dimmed.  From the waltzes of France to beer-drinking songs from Germany, from Polish Polkas to norteno corridos, Big Lou plays it all.

Lou hails from California, not a traditional hotbed of accordion music.  She picked up the instrument in Central Texas while doing a stint as a country-western piano player.  She has played the accordion with a punk polka band, an all-accordion novelty act, and a French cabaret trio, just to name a few.  Lately, Lou has been playing as a duo with her husband David on bass.  They are both thrilled and honored to play in Gaborone.

ON THE  ..... 8th August

This young dance group both produced and directed this event.
This show formed part of the initiative Maitisong has started to encourage young performers to
utilise and showcase their talent by producing their OWN shows.
Actively working at promoting themselves and building their own market and creating an awareness of their group in the publics eye.
