STRING ORCHASTRA WORKSHOP -
hosted by Rosemary Nalden -BUSKAID STRING ENSEMBLE
The Buskaid Soweto String Project (BSSP) was established by Rosemary Nalden in January 1997 when she first came to work in South Africa in response to requests from the local Diepkloof community. Initially the BSSP consisted of some members of the original Diepkloof Project and a few new beginners.
Since then it has quadrupled in size, and currently comprises approximately 70 students ranging in age from six to twenty-seven, all of whom are drawn from the less privileged local community.

Workshops were conducted , with the orchastra visiting a number of schools including happy Homes. These were very well attended and were enjoyed by all.
We received these two touching letters from Happy Homes .....

Because of Sir Seretse KHAMA Day and the subsequent school holidays, it was decided not to screen our regular film as part of the « French Cineclub » on the Thursday, but on the eve the French national day, on
Monday 13 July at 6.45pm,
the Embassy of France to Botswana will have the pleasure of showing the movie
“Home” at the Maitisong Theatre.
This exceptional movie was made for the largest possible audience in order to stimulate worldwide awareness of the state of the world and to encourage the planet’s inhabitants to change their lifestyle by adopting behaviour that takes greater care of the environment.
“Everyone, no matter how small their income, no matter where they live, should be able to see this film.”
Yann Arthus-Bertrand, a well-known French photographer, has made it his specialty to show the earth from the sky. With his new film, HOME, a documentary, he intends to alert public opinion all over the world to the ecological disasters that threaten us. Premiered throughout the planet on 5 June, 2009, International Environment Day, it will be shown on July the 13th 2009, at Maitisong Theater, Maru-a-pula school, at 18.45.
HOME takes us on a fascinating aerial journey all around the planet. Narrated by Glenn Close, the documentary was filmed across fifty countries, including Botswana, and shot entirely from the sky in high definition, offering a powerful commentary on the major environmental and social issues challenging our world today.
HOME invites us to stop, for a moment, in order to have a closer look at our planet and realize how we treat its treasures and beauty. HOME has been shot for the largest possible audience. The aim is to stimulate worldwide awareness of the state of the world today and to encourage its inhabitants to change their lifestyle, by adopting behaviours respecting our environment.
Presented as part of World Environmental Day, HOME premiered simultaneously throughout the world, has created a global event. The film is the result of a collaboration between Yann Arthus-Bertrand, the producer, Luc Besson, the director, and Francois-Henri Pinault, Chief Executive of the French luxury group PPR.
The movie is also available for free online (http://www.youtube.com/user/homeproject) or on the film website (http://www.home-2009.com).

EXODUS @ Maitisong - MONTHLY SHOW on 25th July

AND OUT AND ABOUT .....

"Gasiko le Moritshane" - Natural Form
an exhibition of paintings by Margaret Taylor opened at
Botswanacraft on Thursday 30th July 2009 at 6pm.
The exhibition was from
Thursday 30th July until Wednesday 5th August 2009.
Margaret Taylor was born in Hampshire, England and came to Botswana in 1965, working with the then called VSO. Her first job in Botswana was as a teacher aid at Gaborone Secondary School.
She has been passionate about art most of her life. Initially she only did small size drawings. After having come in contact with Botswana resident artist Ann Gollifer in 2002 she dared to go bigger. In 2006 Steve Jobson at the Art Department at Maru A Pula School gave her an interest to paint with oil. This exhibition shows about 25 paintings, mainly oil on canvas and on board but also a few pastels. The subjects of the paintings are trees and their “close” natural surrounding. The works are a selection of what has been produced during the last 3 years.
The 2 pieces shown here are named “Claw-root” and “Fig-root II”.
The exhibition ran from Thursday 30th July until Wednesday 5th August 2009 and Margaret was present at Botswanacraft for the duration of the exhibition.
No invitation was required to attend.
