Hip Hop lyrics break new ground in HIV war –

Daily News  Article by : Thuso Onkabetse ON Jan 22nd)

Youth Health Organization (YOHO) with support from the US Embassy  embarked on a five-day this week to train ten Hip Hop artistes to develop HIV messages against multiple concurrent partners (MCP), alcohol abuse and gender issues.  The workshop which ends today (Friday, 22nd) brought together renowned local hip hop aristes in Scar, Kast and Zeus. Upcoming artistes are Relebanye “Cibil Nyte” Magosi, Thabo “Touch” Rantao, Kopano “Chub Heltz” Coangae, Olebogeng “Enigma” Tsiako, Rachel “Spurtz” Manda, Thato “Tref” Maruping and William “Billy Slugz Ngandu.

The main reason behind the workshop was to give them skills on how to relay HIV/AIDS messages through performances and interaction with their audience.

The training also emphasizes technical assistance to upcoming artistes so that they could also be able to explore and implement what they have been taught.

Hip Hop has transcended boarders from the United States of America and has become an almost dominant sub culture around the world, thus creating a new social context among the youth.  As a creative organization, YOHO has embarked on something that had never been done before to initiate a new strategy and breaking new ground in the fight against HIV/AIDS and other related issues.

The artistes are currently in studio working on an eleven-track album to be

launched on February 27th at Maitisong.

The album is an attempt to give messages against HIV/AIDS and other social ills maximum publicity.

YOHO recognizes the role hip hop artistes play in the society.  Thus it describes hip hop artistes as commentators and society’s mirror.  Speaking at the workshop, Director of International Law Enforcement Academy, Mr James Smith, advised hip hop artistes that the genre was not all about sex, drugs and killing of other people.

Mr Smith lamented that hip hop has had negative impact on the young generation as they were made to fall for perceptions that were even impossible to apply in daily life.  He urged the artistes to change that mindset and portray hip hop in positive light.  He said they should think productively and always talk about things that would at the end of the day contribute to the community’s awareness.

Mr Smith said since artistes were role models in society, they should be in a position to deliver sensitizing messages on issues affecting them.

For his part, Zeus said, “It has been a productive exercise, it was eye opening and inspirational.  It gave us the responsibility as young artistes to save our society though fruitful message aimed at issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.- BOPA
