OUT AND ABOUT

To prepare for the « football extravaganza » starting on the 11th of June and celebrate the fact that France was chosen as the host country for the 2016 FIFA European championship, our June movie is all about the most popular of sports and one of his most talented performer: Zinedine Zidane (see attachment).

It is a very peculiar movie that, believe or not, even non football fanatics may enjoy (…and that some football fans might not necessarily fully grasp !). If you have never seen it, it is an experience that will forever change the way you look at football and "those people who shoot the ball".

Ronan Skillen - Tabla, didgeridoo and percussion

Ronan’s musical career started age ten with seven years of classical French horn training in Germany. He was then introduced to the Australian Didgeridoo by master drummer, Emmanuel Gomado from Ghana which sparked many new avenues and collaborations. After much self teaching and musical travels Ronan was fortunate to meet a great Tabla maestro. Having been passionate about percussion and always keen on the Tabla this new chapter couldn’t have come too soon. Ronan began playing Tabla in 2002. His teacher, Ustad Akram Khan is India’s master of a very rich and intricately technical north Indian style known as the Ajarara Gharana. As a disciple continuous learning is the focus and Ronan regularly visits India to further his studies. Major influences like Shakti and Trilok Gurtu have led to exploring a fusion of tabla, percussion and didgeridoo within one context by means of a hybrid percussion kit designed by Ronan. This has become part of his permanent set-up and demonstrates a rich textural variety as well as an intriguing versatility. Ronan has performed in S.A., Europe and India and has featured on many recordings and film scores. He currently lives in Cape Town S.A.

If you have passed by the Alliance française lately, you must have caught a glimpse of some artistic work in progress on our wall.

This is a joint cooperation project featuring five artists : four Batswana (Gigi MALEBANG, Ephraim RAPALA, Onatso MUTSU and IsaacCHIBUA) and one French (Olivier BEAUDOIN) painters.

You are cordially invited to attend the Unveiling Ceremony of the mural as well as Olivier BEAUDOIN’s Painting and Sculpture Exhibition on Wednesday 09 JUNE at 18.00 at Alliance française (see carton attached).

About Olivier BEAUDOIN:

Olivier Beaudoin studied fine arts in France but he declares he has actually “always been an artist, even from childhood”.

He is a very versatile artist, working on all material he gets hold of : canvas, wood, stones, walls, iron, plastic…

His style is also very eclectic since he has been inspired by designs from the many exotic countries he has travelled to.

For this exhibition, Olivier is not going to present a mere series of unconnected works of art, but he wishes to present his paintings and sculptures in a way that would make them create the stories he wants to tell : stories of nature, of animals, of the bush… and life in the dark !
