TANGO EXTREMO presents: ‘Viva la Vida!’

Starring TANYA SCHAAP, BEN VAN DEN DUNGEN, ROB VAN KREEVELD, ADINDA MEERTINS, HANS VAN DER MAAS and ARMANDO VIDAL

ONE  SHOW ONLY – MONDAY 15TH  OF NOVEMBER 2010 AT MAITISONG

VIVA LA VIDA is a unique project of Tango, Folklore, Jazz and Movie, produced by the Dutch group 'Quinteto Tango Extremo', featuring three guest soloists.  The six strong formation realises a very exciting melting pot of Tango, Folklore (to name style: Candombe, Chacarera, Milonga and Milongon) combined with jazz and improvisation.

In practically every song, there is space for improvisation: a typical jazz characteristic which is indissolubly attached to Quinteto Tango Extremo.  During the concert, nostalgic and unique images of amongst others celebrating crowds during the carnival of Buenos Aires, at the beginning of the last century will be shown.  These images will be projected behind the group.

About the Quinteto Tango Extremo:

Since her creation in 2003 the Quinteto Tango  Extremo has gone through a development that you could at least call ‘remarkable’. The ensemble has played on practically all bigger and smaller venues in The Netherlands, but is also touring non-stop over the rest of the world: Spain, France, Mexico, UK, Belgium, Turkey, Kurdistan, Croatia, South Korea, Argentina, Uruguay, Russia, China and many more..

The group has produced five albums so far: El Silencio (2003), Una Cosa Diferente (2004), Érase una Vez (2007), Carnaval de Buenos Aires (2008), Mind the Gap (2010).

Quinteto Tango Extremo is known as Europe’s leading Tango Orchestra.

Line-up

Tanya Schaap - violin

Ben van den Dungen - soprano saxophon

Rob van Kreeveld - piano

Adinda Meertins - double bass

Hans van der Maas - accordion

Armando Vidal - percussions

The musicians

These musicians belong to the major league of the classical, Latin- and Jazz fields.

Violinist Tanya Schaap studied and played with Dutch bandoneonist Carel Kraayenhof and with Fernando Suarez Paz, the violinist of Astor Piazzolla's ‘Quinteto Tango Nuevo’. Since 2008 she is violinist at the Argentinean all star orchestra ‘Cafe de los Maestros’. With this orchestra she has been touring in France, Greece and the UK.

Saxophonist Ben van den Dungen teaches saxophone at the Jazzdepartments of the conservatory of Rotterdam. For more than 20 years he is already one of Europe's top Jazz- and Latin musicians. Ben has musically always taken a very wide stand, has had an eclectic background, having played in several Latino orchestras i.e. Nueva Manteca and The Cubop City Big Band, and has recently travelled to India to focus on the Indian music. Ben has been teaching saxophone masterclasses at universities all over the world. For more information, please go to www.myspace.com/benvandendungen

Pianist Rob van Kreeveld can easily be counted as Holland’s number one Jazzpianist. Has been travelling all over the globe with his music. He is teacher at the academy of music in Rotterdam and at the Royal academy of music in The Hague. Rob is guest professor  Jazzpiano at the conservatories of Helsinki, Boston and Liechtenstein.

The accordionist Hans van der Maas is a man with many faces: graduated musicologist, conductor, composer and accordionist. He teaches at the Koorenhuis, a centre for the performing arts in The Hague, where he is also artistic director of the Classical Music department.

Adinda Meertins graduated in 2009 at the conservatory of music in Rotterdam at the Jazzdepartment. Since then she is the bass player in the Quinteto Tango Extremo. Besides her work with this group she likes to focus on mainly Latin- and Latin Jazz music. She is involved in several ensembles in this scene.

Alliance Française and Art in Motion Present

ART FUNKTIONZ

« ROOTS »

@

Alliance Française Sat 13 NOV @18.00

Art FunKtionz are consciously themed parties that allow the audience to experience live art while engaging in good music, food and entertainment. The unifying factor is carefully selected music played by DJs while the audience simultaneously experiences various live art events happening through out the space.

Art FunKtionz’s objective is to provide a meaningful experience in entertainment for the community while raising the standard of appreciation for local art by respecting the audience with quality craftsmanship. These monthly FunKtionz with different awareness themes will offer a broader range of artistic events and disciplines to enhance the cultural calendar of Botswana

The first Art FunKtion is on Saturday 13th of November under the theme ROOTS

Time: 6pm (Dinner strictly served from 7-8pm)

Motivational Piece:

The roots theme is inspired by words one of Botswana’s founding fathers, Sir Seretse Khama, liked to say:

A nation without a past is a nation without a future”

Roots can be interpreted as our past which is connected to where we are going. As our first initiative, ROOTS enables us to return to our source and provides a good inspiration for the first Art FunKtionz. The source of your inspiration does not need to be viewed only through nationality or ethic background; it can also define your personal belief system that makes you the person you are.

We thus invite you to go back to your source and show this inspiration through different attire that best represents you. Your inspiration will be combined into one unified experience of live art and music from around the globe.

Food for thought: (something to chew on during dinner)

Access to and understanding of a country’s culture is through its language.
