In addition to the show

there will be a short workshop session from 15h00 to 17h00

The title for the workshop is the following:

An improvisational approach into contemporary southern African jazz music.

This will include improvisation tips, some research methods and interaction with the pupils. Ivan would like the students to bring their instruments along.

Saxophonist and composer Ivan Mazuze is:

  • Award nominee for Best Contemporary Jazz album of the year 2010 at the SAMA awards (South African Music Awards).

  • Finalist of Debut'09 for Best World Music Group at the Oslo World Music festival, Norway in 2009.

  • Winner at the Old Mutual Jazz Competiton for Best Composition, 2001, South Africa.

Mazuze is currently promoting his debut album Maganda which was released in South Africa on January 8th, 2009. The album is a reflection of Ivan’s musical journey and experiences in jazz and african "worlds" of music.

Mazuze has performed with internationally acclaimed artists and been featured at numerous international music festivals in southern Africa, South America as well as in Europe.

Ivan Mazuze is Honours in jazz studies and Masters graduate in ethnomusicology at University of Cape Town. Mazuze also writes ethno-musicological articles about music and trance in ritual practices, which has been released in the educational magazine The Talking Drum (2007, no.28).

In addition to education, after finishing his Masters degree, Mazuze has started an individual campaign to contribute towards enriching music libraries around Maputo, Mozambique. Since then Mazuze has offered his Masters thesis and articles to different libraries around Maputo such as Escola Nacional de Musica, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (departamento de artes e comunicacoes) and ARPAC.

In 2007, Mazuze has also been part of a campaign initiated by the Ministry of Arts and Culture in South Africa to combat crime and poverty through musical education in some of the informal settlement areas of Cape Town

  • Showcase at Utune (World Music conference in Drammen, Norway).

  • Recorded for the debut album of South african/norwegian marimba player Zwai Mbula "My heritage".

  • Tour in Cape Town, live performances at Rainbow room, SABC studios auditorium, Artscape Arena, Nassau Center.

  • Live performances with Busi Ncube (Zimbabwe) for Oslo Global Music concerts series, Norway

  • Live performance at Mela festival, Oslo, Norway.

Participation and collaboration with Manou Gallo (Ivory Coast, Belgium) at Afrikan History Week festival, Oslo, Norway

SHANTI LO

Born Tumediso Kagiso Loeto, at only 9 years old, Shanti Lo was a member of Watoto Band, an initiative his parents Clifford and gospel singer mom Mpho Loeto started.

Background Information

In 2000, after gaining experience as back up singer for a few local artists including his mom, Shanti Lo landed a two year recording deal with Stona Records, which produced the album “Koi”. He received two nominations at the 3rd Annual Botswana Music Awards in 2001 for Best R’n’B song “Ke a go rata” and best kwaito song for “Koi” .

Over the years, Shanti Lo has worked on different projects with a number of artists across all genres.

You are invited to the opening of an exhibition of recent work by
Ann Gollifer at Sanitas in the new space
'@linnaeus' behind the Tea Garden. The exhibition will be open to the public from 12 noon on Saturday the 30th October TO 5PM.  Dr. Gus Nilsson will open the exhibition.  There will be a performance by Ngozichukuka Chukura, thereafter Norbert Volker's Violin and a Guitar will provide music for dancing.
