March 2011

Thursday the Third of March, monthly FFF,  7 pm (AV Centre - Maru-a-Pula school)

“In White Material, featuring extraordinary performances by Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Lambert and Isaach De Bankole, Claire Denis has created a riveting and politically complex film about a Frenchwoman desperately trying to hang on to her coffee plantation in an unnamed Africa country in the throes of revolution.” [Comment from Durban International Film Festival, 2010]

SYNOPSIS: “Running Ostrich”

The multimedia performance that I am preparing is based on a poem in a book by Arthur Markowitz called The Rebirth of the Ostrich (1971). I am aware that controversy has surrounded this book; “and Other Stories of the Kalahari Bushmen Told in Their Own Manner”, has, for example, been called into question in the context of South African race relations of the 1970s and 1980s. But the political economy of apartheid and indigenous-knowledge copyright aside, I found the content of the poem inspiring. Death and rebirth into a new, improved self is a powerful and timeless metaphor in many traditions. I was also inspired by the Botswana basket pattern called Running Ostrich, and consequently realized that the patterns woven into Botswana baskets have names and sometimes stories to tell. I have sought to make these two sources, poem and basket, a component of my own sense of a contemporary culture and aesthetic by combining them with the music of traditional Tswana instruments, jazz saxophone, baroque music sung by a choir, classical strings, Indian drums, and experimental visuals and sounds, all of them meant to reflect these very times we are living in. The artistic language that I am developing expresses my own identities, and, perhaps, the identities of the nation and of the region at large.

PROFILE OF DIRECTOR:

Moratiwa Molema is an all round artist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media Art from Hartford, Connecticut, in the USA and a Masters Degree in Film and Television Production from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She returned home to Botswana in 2010 and has since then worked tirelessly to establish herself as an art practitioner, even though her academic background is more Fine Art orientated. Her love for stage and live performance is evident. In 2010 she directed and performed in productions for corporate events such as FOBEX and BTC. She also directed and performed in an opening act for the Russian Ballet, and performed at the Maitisong Festival aswell as the Presidents Concert. Towards the end of 2010, Moratiwa Molema was involved as a director and curator of an event called Art FunKtionz. The objective of Art FunKtionz is to bring art to the people in a less formal way by  facilitating a free flow of cultural exchanges through fine art and performance art, whilst providing a meaningful experience of entertainment that raises the standard of appreciation for local art whilst having a groovy party. She is also one of the directors of Fenomenal Drops, the Botswana partner of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, with whom her company is planning a Jazz Festival for Botswana in 2011.

PRESS RELEASE

Brazilian music takes centre-stage.

24th March 2011 (19:00hrs – 20:30hrs) at Maitisong

Entrance: Free

PATUBATÊ, a Brazilian musical group, is scheduled to perform in Gaborone on the 24th of March 2011 at Maitisong, from 19:00hrs – 20:30hrs. PATUBATÊ is a musical group that blends percussion, junk iron and electronic music, exploring Brazilian musicality with non-conventional instruments.  That is what makes it so peculiar and unique!

For the PATUBATÊ musicians, junk iron doesn’t mean trash but music. On their hands, tubs, vehicle exhausts, zinc plates, pans, soda cans and truck parts have a different and curious destination: they turn into musical instruments used by PATUBATÊ.

Since 1999, when the group was created, they have captivated audiences of all gender and age. Their constant quest to improve their technique has resulted in the innovation of new sounds and vibes from unexpected objects, most of them recycled.  This unbelievable research results in new sounds, movements and a worthy destination of the trash.

PATUBATÊ´s live and short performances include a variety of Brazilian rhythms and swings, such as samba, dance music, funk, tango, salsa, drum'n'bass, samba reggae, and other rhythms inherited from Africa. And this is what makes PATUBATE´s concerts so exclusive.

PATUBATÊ will host a workshop on the 23rd March that will precede their performance of the 24th. The workshop will be aimed at bringing together people of all ages to take part in this practice session. Participants will have the opportunity of sharing ideas on how to create music using unexpected and recycled objects.

Take your time in viewing some videos and photos of PATUBATÊ:
