CONCEPT/CONTEXT/THEME

Having been inspired by the recent launch of the new Degree programme in Visual and Performing Arts at UB, the current cast for UBTT decided to work on a limited adaptation of Joe C. De Graft (Ghana)’s old play Sons and Daughters. Although first published in the sixties, De  Graft’s play finds relevance in contemporary Botswana in that it is about an over-weaning father who decides to overrule his son and daughter’s career choices as a fine artist (painter) and dancer choosing in their place, engineering and law respectively.

The play infuses dialogue and song in order to focus on the tensions that arise within the family unit when one generation is bent on dictating adult career choices for the youth as it also addresses some of the social dangers and betrayals that can be visited on unsuspecting parents when they try to force their children into unwanted careers.
