MOONGA KAPAMBWE - Singer

Judges Choice 2009

Can dreams come true?

My African Dream has been discovering talent in Botswana for 15 years. Last year, the selection team travelled around Botswana for a month, assessing entries for MAD 2009.
" We were at Botlale Primary School's Annual Talent Show, when during the interval, the school choir sang for us", says Rusette Auton, one of the organisers of MAD (My African Dream). "Out of the Choir we could hear this amazing voice ... we called the voice out, and identified it as belonging to a young man aged 13 years old, ... we insisted he enter My African Dream".
He made it  through the Semi Finals and then proceeded to be selected as the Judges' Choice in the Grand Finale. As he stood on stage in the finals, conquering the stage fright that made him nauseous and shake in the wings, "I was so worried he was goint to freeze on stage" Rusette said. "But he got half way through his song and every single one of the 650 people in the auditorium gave him a standing ovation. He sang with a passion that I had never seen ..It was quite phenomenal! Many of the audience (including myself) were moved to tears". He had competed with more than 3000 hopefuls from all over Botswana to become the My African Dream Judges Choice of 2009.... but he did not stop there!

His name is Moonga. He's thirteen years old and he has a dream. That night, in front of those 650 people, BTV's camera crew, and thousands watching at home on their televisions, Moonga's dream of becoming a professional singer took a step closer to becoming a reality. Mara Louw, internationally acclaimed singer, and judge for South African Idols, performed with all the finalists that night. She singled Moonga out, brought him to the front of the stage and told everyone that in order ot ensure this young talent not be allowed to fall through the cracks, he needed professional training.. ....
****************************************************

My name is Moonga Kapambwe. I was born on the 03 September 1996 in Kitwe, Zambia to parents Moono & Danny Kapambwe.

I used to sing around the house a lot when I was 6 and my parents thought I made so much noise! My dad had a mini recording studio at home so I thought I’d use the opportunity to start recording tape recordings of myself singing. It helped a lot to boost my confidence. At the age of 9 I put my singing to the test and entered my primary school’s first talent show. I auditioned with the song ‘Stand Up For Love’ by Destiny’s Child. Little did I know, I made it! I was so excited about it and every single day I practiced and practiced. From there, I performed at all my school functions.

In 2009 I entered My African Dream. I was so nervous and petrified. I didn’t think I was gonna make it through to the semi finals. But I did. I auditioned with the song ‘When You Look Me in the Eyes’ by the Jonas Brothers. When I made it to the Grand Finale, I had a hard time searching for a song to sing. Then Mandi gave me ‘Hallelujah’ a song by Alexandra Burke. I loved the song and I knew I could manage to sing it and on that night of the Grand Finale, I gave my all to that performance. I was so scared that night. At the end of it all I won the 2009 Judges Choice award and I got the chance to meet Mara Louw, a woman I adored. She was simply amazing! From M.A.D, so many doors were opened for me. I got the chance to sing for the president at the President’s Concert. I sang Hallelujah with Rosemarie Hamoir (an amazing singer) and I was in Stuart White’s production ‘Rags to Riches’ and I met such amazing people. This year I entered a competition – IMTA. The prize was a chance to go to New York, USA. Sadly, I didn’t make it but that didn’t get me down.

I had my first ever concert in April 2010 and another in May. The point was for me to raise money to go to Drakensburg Boys Choir School in Durban. Things didn’t work out so we’re using the money for me to get voice trained locally. I love performing and I want to do it for the rest of my life. Its what I love and I want to make people smile when I sing. I am so blessed to have people that actually support me in what I do. My family, friends and anyone else out there that does support me. I’d also like to thank Rosalyn Beukes. Without her I’d be nothing. I love her to death. I love Rusette and Mandi too. Without them, my dream would be dead. I’m a hard-working kid who wants to keep his dream alive and if there’s anyone out there willing to help me, then GOD bless you. I’m gonna have more shows in the future and I hope you all come for them.
