Monday, 08 September 2014 marked International Literacy Day, a perfect day to launch the early awaited financial literacy project delivered to you in an entertaining and informative package. People of all ages and all walks of life across the country can now catch the Madi Majwana radio drama weekly and look forward to the national theatre tour from 13 October 2014. As a major sponsor of this project Barclays Bank Botswana has invested in Botswana’s economic and social wellbeing.

Speaking at the launch, Managing Director of Barclays Bank Botswana Ms Reinette van Der Merwe highlighted that the project works to educate the public and help people reach their goals. She also indicated that the project will reach a vast audience through also engaging various stakeholders.

Minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi emphasized the importance of financial literacy and how the mismanagement and lack of understanding of money matters contributes to various social ills in society. She stressed the need for children to be educated about money from a young age and that the Madi Majwana project has come at an opportune time.

The audience got a tantalizing taste of the edutainment to come as they attentively absorbed the first episode of the original and locally produced radio drama during the listening session of the launch’s program. In addition, they got the opportunity to witness scenes from the Madi Majwana theatre road show and share in the knowledge, laughter and development future audiences will receive. The audience was also marvelled by the clever collaboration of poetry, live instruments, vocals and DJ during the first live performance of the drama’s soundtrack also titled Madi Majwana.

This project bares further testament as to how the arts play a crucial role in the social and economic enhancement of society, as highlighted by Director of Maitisong Gao Lemmenyane.
