Welcome to maitisong

Maitisong, meaning “place of entertainment” in Setswana, is a cultural hub located in Gaborone, Botswana, owned by Maru-a-Pula School. Founded in 1987, it was initially conceived as a dual-purpose space serving as a school assembly hall and a community theater venue. The project was made possible through fundraising efforts in the USA and South Africa, with architect Ian Marshall designing the facility. This initiative marked the school’s commitment to community outreach, which it had practiced since its establishment in 1972.

The opening of Maitisong ushered in a new era for Botswana’s arts scene. The Maitisong Festival, created to showcase local talent, brought together various artistic groups, injecting music, dance, and drama into the cultural landscape of Gaborone. Over the years, Maitisong has evolved into a vital cultural resource, providing support and information on performers, music lessons, theater management, and fundraising. It has hosted a wide array of performances, including those by renowned local and international artists. Maitisong has not only become a symbol of Maru-a-Pula School’s community engagement but has also enriched the educational experience by fostering a thriving drama studies program. In doing so, it has firmly established itself as a leader in promoting the performing arts in the region.
